That's All, Folks! The Restaurant: July 9, 1973 - February 27, 2017
Last Licks!! The Restaurant is in its final week. We will close our doors after dinner on Monday February 27th. If you're thinking of coming in, I strongly recommend making a reservation - phone 964-9800. Also if you are holding a gift certificate, best get in here with it. We've been having such a good time this past two months - so many longtime customers coming in for goodbye dinner. It's really been lovely seeing everyone. The dining room gets pretty loud some nights with all the chatting and visiting going on. A visitor from out of town asked if we were celebrating Mardi Gras or something because it was so effervescent in the room. Thanks to everyone for your loyal support, love, kindness, friendship, and good memories. It's been a hell of a run!
Our First Friday event was a great success. Music and art at their finest, with the most discerning and joyful crowd. Really might have been the best one ever...Here's Karl Schoen on Baritone Sax, Ed Rinehart on Piano, and Lost Johnson on Percussion. Sue Sisk sat in and sang a couple, and the house was rockin'. The art exhibit was a panoply of media, style and subject matter - thanks to all the artists who contributed work and came to the opening: Jack Gilmour, Bill Fenley, Ilja Tinfo, Stan Miklose, Bob Ross, S.R. Kelley, J. Logan Smith, and Kendrick Petty. In other news, The Restaurant will be open on Tuesday, February 14 for Valentine's Day. Better make your reservation now - we expect to be very busy. Thanks to everyone for all you support, love, friendship and encouragement over the years.
The Gallery at The Restaurant First Friday February 3rd We've got something special this month. Since it may be our last ever First Friday event, I've invited all ten artists that have shown in The Gallery, over the past two years, to participate in a group show. It's impressive, thought-provoking, and a visual feast - with lots of new work, as well as some pieces that have been seen here before. Live Music provided by Lost Johnson Productions featuring Ed Rinehart, Karl Schoen, Les Tarr and Lost Johnson, and special guests. Doors open at 5. Music starts at 5:30. I want to commend my entire staff for their fortitude, good nature, and willing hearts this Holiday season. I'm so proud of them all. We have an amazing team - in the dining room and behind the scenes. Hey, Everybody! The rumor mill is running amok - I'm hearing from folks that they heard The Restaurant is closing next week. Please help spread the word that we will be here until the close of Escrow - and that will most likely be at the end of February or beginning of March. There are so many details to be worked out in the process of selling. The Mendo Bistro IS closing after New Year's Eve - perhaps that is the cause for the confusion. Lots of changes in the Fort Bragg dining scene... All the best to all of you in 2017!
Facebook friends around the world, as you know The Restaurant and the building have been for sale for a couple of months. I have received and accepted an offer and things are moving forward to complete the sale within 90 days. The buyer is Silver Canul, a local restaurateur, who plans to move his restaurant, Mayan Fusion, into The Restaurant space, serving lunch and dinner, and offering beer, wine AND spirits. Silver has been looking for a new location for over a year hoping for a larger location in the downtown area. He plans to expand his menu but also will retain the Mayan flavor. This is bittersweet for me - I've had 17 fantastic years here - 15 of them as Jim's partner, and the last two and a half on my own. The Restaurant has been well-loved by thousands of loyal patrons, and hundreds of employees over the past 43.5 years. It's one-of-a-kind, and part of a dying breed of small, family-owned fine dining restaurants. Until our last day you can expect the same high quality food, service and ambience. If you are holding a gift certificate, we suggest that you use it in the next three months. Oh, don't forget or wait until the last minute to make your reservation for New Year's Eve , as we expect to be fully booked that night - call us: 707 964-9800. We'll be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas day but then we will be open every day (including Tues and Wed) until January 3rd, then back to our regular schedule, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We're decorated for the holidays, and added some permanent lights to our awning which brighten up the block. Come see us soon!
The Gallery at The Restaurant is pleased to announce a new exhibit opening on First Friday, December 2. The show titled "Mendocino Heritage Artists Collection", curated by Claire Amanno, showcases the masterful works of Charles Stevenson, Dorr Bothwell, Olaf Palm and Matt Leach. Live music provided by Lost Johnson Productions starring Fort Bragg's favorite son Steven Bates on guitar and vocals. Doors open at 5. Music starts 5:30. The Facebook posting about The Restaurant and our building being for sale got an overwhelming response from friends near and far. Thank you all for taking to time to write and to share the post. I know there's someone out there who will carry on the grand tradition of The Restaurant and love and care for the building as much as we have. Every year at this time, we take a vacation and close the restaurant for ten days. So, we will be closed beginning Sunday October 30, and reopening on November 11. If you come in tonight, Saturday, we're offering "no corkage fee" if you mention it to your server. And come see our great Halloween decorations. Call for reservations - 964-9800. Next door at the Mason's Hall is "Haunted Hall of Horrors" with some seriously scary stuff - tonight from 7-10. This is a fundraiser for local youth projects. They've been doing this for many years and it just gets better and better. Note: Too scary for small children.
I've got big news for all of our facebook friends - The Restaurant business and the building are for sale! It's been a difficult decision to make - but I'm ready for a new adventure - and the time seems right to start moving in a new direction. This grand old, massively-built, solid redwood building has served us well since 1973. Built in 1895 as the first hospital in Fort Bragg, the upstairs living space is enormous: 2500 square feet, 10' ceilings, with three or four bedrooms, three and half baths, (including a separate two-room guest quarters with a private entrance and full bath), two sitting rooms, an office, a kitchen, spacious hallway. Great light from large windows, some with original wavy glass, and skylights. There's 800 sq. feet of clean, dry, lighted storage space between the two floors. A deck across the back of the building is sunny and sheltered from the north winds. The Restaurant downstairs seats 70 in two dining rooms. There are two entrances from Main Street, high ceiling in main dining room, some original/antique architectural features, cozy booths as well as separate tables, two guest bathrooms. There's a large double kitchen with two entrances from the rear, oversized walk-in refrigerator, storage room, pantry, employee bathroom. A real bonus in downtown Fort Bragg is the 12-space parking lot behind the building. All equipment and furnishings in the restaurant are included, except artwork. On Friday, October 7th, head on over to The Gallery at The Restaurant for First Friday Art Walk Festivities from 5 to 8:30. In The Gallery, there's a new show - "Things You Left Behind" - the first one-man show of photography by local artist Bill Fenley. The dynamic, colorful and fascinating images began life as piles of cast-off scrap metal. Fenley manipulates the images to emphasize form and detail and to transform them into something new. For your listening pleasure Lost Johnson Productions presents Bill Yates and Joe Pardini on acoustic guitar, bass and vocals starting at 5:30. Fantastic opening tonite for Ilja's show of rocks paintings "Natural History". The music was great; Sean Van Bus Kirk, Sean Connelly and Lost Johnson provided a superb musical accompaniment to the paintings. Lots of happy people in the Gallery and the dining room. The paintings will be on exhibit until the end of the month. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the music and artwork.
